    Balancing Productivity & Well-being

A column on India’s work-hours debate, written while Narayana Murthy’s seventy-hour week, Rishad Premji’s counterpoint and Bhavish Aggarwal’s endorsement were being argued in public. It sets out why work–life balance is a personal rather than an organisational measure, and why the argument looks different in an economy where much of the population earns under ₹25,000 a month.

A journey through the last four years

The Rapid Evolution of Artificial Intelligence

A history of large language models written for a general newspaper readership — GPT-2 in 2019, GPT-3 in 2020, GPT-4 in 2022, and Llama 3.1’s 405 billion parameters — and an argument that the more consequential shift is machines acquiring situational awareness rather than raw capability.

Centre clears 5G spectrum auction for 10x faster services

Written the week the Union Cabinet cleared the 5G spectrum auction, this explains what the sale actually covered across the low, mid and high bands, and sets out the difference between 4G and 5G in the terms that matter to a user: latency measured in milliseconds rather than tens of them, and the ability to connect very large numbers of devices in a small area.

  • Newspaper column headlined “India @75: Digital India” by Dr Ajay Data, 2022.

    Digital India 2022

    India @75: Digital India

Written for the seventy-fifth anniversary of independence, this argues that India’s digital transformation is a success story worth stating plainly — public digital infrastructure, vernacular language on the internet, and the case for email addresses and domain names that work in Indian scripts, which is the work the author has spent two decades on.
